Gov. Dennis Daugaard said the state Board of Water and Natural Resources approved a $2.439 million funding package for Garretson to replace drinking water and wastewater lines, according to a press release.

The funding package includes a $1.16 million Clean Water State Revolving Fund loan, a $639,500 Consolidated Water Facilities Construction Program grant and a $639,500 Drinking Water State Revolving Fund loan. Loan terms are 2.5 percent for 30 years for both loans.

The funds will be administered through the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

“I am pleased to announce that Garretson will receive this assistance,” said Gov. Daugaard. “This funding will help the city make necessary improvements to drinking water and sanitary sewer lines to better serve its residents.”

The project involves replacing old and deteriorating cast iron water main with 6,000 feet of 6-inch PVC water main and clay sanitary sewer lines with 5,500 feet of 8- to 10-inch PVC sewer main along Third Street, Main Avenue and the city’s truck route. The project will address issues with low water pressure and rusty drinking water, as well as excessive inflow and infiltration in the sanitary sewer system.

The estimated cost of the projects is $2.44 million.

The Consolidated Water Facilities Construction Program, funded in part by revenues from the Petroleum Release Compensation Tank Inspection fee and the sale of lotto tickets, provides grants and loans for water, wastewater and watershed projects.

The State of South Dakota and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency fund the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund Program, which provides low-interest loans for public drinking water system projects.
