Crews extinguished a fire at 321 N. Spring Avenue on Sunday afternoon.

One person was taken into custody on Sunday afternoon after police said the man tried to push through authorities to "save" his beer that was inside the residence.

Authorities were called to a structure fire at 321 N. Spring at 12:35 p.m. for a report of a fire in a multifamily residence with people possibly still inside.

Two people were treated and released at the scene and a third was transported to the hospital with smoke inhalation and burns, according to a release from the Sioux Falls Fire Department. The fire was extinguished in 10 minutes, according to the fire department.

One person was arrested for using "poor judgment" by trying to run back into the house to get his beer back, Sgt. Andrew Siebenborn said.

The man was directed by both police and fire department personnel on scene to stay outside, but he persisted and tried to get back in the building, Siebenborn said. The man told officers he wanted to get his beer.

It wasn't immediately known what type of beer the man was trying to retrieve, and Siebenborn didn't know whether the man had been drinking.

More information is expected to be released at Monday's daily police briefing. The man was charged with interference with a fire or law enforcement official.

The Red Cross is providing assistance to nine people who were displaced by the fire. The extent of the damage wasn't released.
