UPDATE:Shooter and victim identified

One person died in a shooting incident in a Dell Rapids residential area Tuesday night.

Everyone involved in the incident had been detained and the public is not in any danger, said Capt. Mike Walsh of the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office.

The man was reportedly found on East 9th Street between LaDelle and Clark avenues around 8 p.m. Someone was performing CPR on the victim when emergency responders arrived. The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital, Walsh said.

Walsh said around 10 p.m. that it was still unclear whether the death was the result of a homicide. As of Tuesday night, authorities were referring to the incident as a shooting investigation.

"As more facts come out, circumstances could change," Walsh said.

Walsh couldn't say where the gunshot wound was or how many shots were fired. He also couldn't say whether the victim and others involved knew each other.

Neighbors said they did not hear any gunshots and only became alert when they heard sirens.

Mary Gannon, who has lived in Dell Rapids her whole life, was shocked by the news down the block from her home.

"This is a small community," Gannon said. "When something like this happens, it really hits home."

The South Dakota Highway Patrol, Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office and Dell Rapids Fire Rescue were on scene.
