John Hogan III, 25, of Brookings, was arrested for aggravated assault against a police officer, resisting arrest and obstruction of law enforcement.

A Brookings man was arrested Tuesday night after he bit a police officer and interfered with emergency medical services.

Emergency medical staff was responding to The District on West Empire Place at 7:40 p.m. to help a woman who hit her head on the ground, said Sgt. Paul Creviston.  The woman has since been cleared from the hospital.

When medical technicians were trying to help the woman, an aggressive man interfered, Creviston said.

Police tried to separate the man from medical staff and the man punched, kicked and bit an officer, leaving bite marks on the officer's upper thigh and breaking the skin. The officer went to the hospital with minor injuries.

"(Getting bit) happens more than we like to admit," Creviston said. "It was probably the first thing that presented itself to the subject, so he took a chomp."
