A federal jury Thursday found a Sioux Falls man guilty on three counts of possession of illegal firearms.

Darren Kyle Stepp-Zafft was charged after authorities found illegal guns, grenades and bomb making materials inside his home last year.

A federal grand jury indicted him in January on possession of unregistered firearms charges after five guns had no transfer or registration records.

  • Two German Sports Guns, model GSG-5, .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle

  • A Group Industries model HR4332S, 9mm semi-automatic rifle

  • A Ruger model .22 Charger, .22 caliber semi-automatic pistol

  • A Masterpiece Arms 9mm semi-automatic rifle

Each of the guns had an overall length of less than 26 inches and a barrel with a length of less than 16 inches, and were not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record as required by federal law.

He also had nine improvised explosive devices that qualified as destructive devices and two firearms that qualified as silencers. Those, too, were not registered to him.

Zafft was arrested in December 2015 after police found 114 guns, including more than a dozen illegally modified rifles and shotguns after a slug went through his neighbor’s wall. They also found two handmade silencers, multiple grenades, about 10,000 rounds of ammunition and $20,000 cash. The bomb squad also removed gunpowder, fuses and other equipment for making explosive devices.
