Week 7 leftovers: Jacks stay aggressive late at UNI

Northern Iowa held a Pink Game promotion on Saturday.

Here are some final notes from South Dakota State's crazy victory at Northern Iowa on Saturday:

A recurring conversation during the live chat and afterward on Twitter: The Jacks' late-game play calling on offense.
To recap, SDSU took a 28-14 lead with less than 9 minutes left and wound up tied six minutes later before driving for the game-winning field goal.
First, a review: UNI scored to get within 28-21 then recovered a brilliantly disguised and executed onside kick. The Jacks came up with a turnover on downs to get the ball back at 3:45 remaining and subsequently passed twice, the second being picked off a deflection and returned for the tying score.
In other words, SDSU had only two offensive plays in the game-changing span. The Panthers had two timeouts remaining at that point.
"You have to attempt to take what they give you, and the run to Zenner was not easy tonight," coach John Stiegelmeier said as the star back limited to 2.8 yards per carry. "I love how we coached the game – not tentatively, but we went out and tired to win the football game on every play."
After UNI pulled even, SDSU kept going for it, calling four pass plays on the five-play drive that ultimately won the game.

Instant replay was available in the game, and was used once – it upheld the call made on the field that Jacks QB Zach Lujan was in the act of passing when the ball came loose. Replay also will be available this week for SDSU vs. Youngstown State and for the Jacks at North Dakota State game.

By topping 100 yards for the second game in a row, Jacks senior receiver Jason Schneider surpassed 2,000 yards for his career. He stands fourth in school history in that category and second (only to JaRon Harris) at the NCAA Division level.

In the concourse of the UNI-Dome, UNI has a series of glass cases dedicated to the best players in program history. Among them: Former linebacker Josh Mahoney, an O'Gorman High School graduate.
The Panthers also aren't short on NFL lineage, including sophomore DB Ray Buchanan Jr., son of longtime NFL DB Ray Buchanan Sr.

While Zach Zenner and the SDSU football team was competing in the UNI-Dome, Abby Zenner and the SDSU swimming and diving team also was competing in Cedar Falls.

The Jacks' opening drive went 84 yards in 17 plays over 7 minutes, 18 seconds. It's their longest march of the season in terms of plays and time – and may have profoundly impacted the game. That is, UNI safety Ray Mitchell said afterward that he thought the team lacked fire early. Hard to be fiery when giving up a drive like that.
Also, SDSU went 5 of 5 on third-down conversions in the possession whereas the Jacks didn't allow a third-down conversion until the third quarter.

SDSU's No. 3 quarterback in this game and going forward until Austin Sumner returns from injury? Tight end Cam Jones. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound junior was a quarterback at Burnsville High School in Minnesota.
As for Sumner, he threw a few passes (in street clothes) during warm-ups because the drills require more than two quarterbacks. However, he continues to exhibit a limp when walking.
