A Sioux Falls Police Department officer climbed into a storm drain to rescue several ducklings Tuesday morning.

An officer hands a duckling to a man at Eighth Street and Minnesota Avenue on Tuesday.

A passerby flagged down the officer just before 11 a.m. The mother duck was nearby, and the youngsters were handed up to citizens eager to help.

Citizens placed the ducklings in bushes near the intersection. The ducklings had fallen through the holes in the storm drain lid, a witness said, and the officer had to remove the heavy lid before sliding down into the drain to rescue the six stranded birds.
