Pursuit ends with vehicle in retention pond

A pursuit that began on Interstate 29 ended in a retention pond in southwest Sioux Falls on Friday night.

The incident began when a South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper attempted to pull over a vehicle for speeding on I-29 near the 41st Street exit, state trooper Kristoff DeKramer said.

The vehicle did not stop and led authorities on a pursuit near the Empire Mall. The vehicle drove through parking lots in an apartment complex near 49th Street and Solberg Avenue and eventually drove into a frozen retention pond.

The driver was not injured and was arrested, DeKramer said. Several charges are pending, including aggravated eluding and speeding.

The driver did not appear to be intoxicated.
