PIERRE – An Eagle Butte man has pleaded guilty to an attempted murder charge stemming from a standoff with law officers in October.

Twenty-seven-year-old Jason Garreau entered his plea Thursday. KCCR radio reports court documents indicate Garreau pleaded guilty to one state count in exchange for a 20-year sentence. He initially was charged with two counts.

Garreau will be sentenced May 28.

Authorities allege Garreau held officers at bay for almost nine hours Oct. 31 at a Pierre mobile home and injured two city police officers in an exchange of gunfire.

Garreau already has pleaded guilty to federal charges stemming from the incident and is to be sentenced in June. Several charges were dismissed, including some related to a shootout in Hyde County in which Garreau’s cousin was killed.
