A man faces multiple charges after leading an officer on a foot chase through a central Sioux Falls neighborhood, police said.

The pursuit began at 11:30 p.m. Thursday when a traffic officer tried to pull over a sport utility vehicle with expired dealer plates.

Samuel J. Harwood, 32, of Sioux Falls refused to pull over downtown at 11th Street and Main Avenue, police Capt. Greg VandeKamp said. He continued driving, eventually stopping at an apartment complex on East 15th Street.

Harwood struggled with the officer, VandeKamp said, eventually breaking free and leading a foot chase that ended back at the apartment complex.

The officer found a syringe with methamphetamine residue on Harwood, VandeKamp said.

Harwood was charged with eluding police, fleeing an officer on foot, resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
