Dog jumps out 2nd story window to attack woman, dog
A woman and her dog were hurt after another dog jumped out a screened second-story window and attacked them on Saturday, police said.
Around 7 p.m. on Saturday, a pitbull mix jumped from the second-story window of a house and chased two women walking their dogs in the 5500 block of West Bream Place, Sioux Falls Police Lt. Loren McManus said.
One woman and her dog were unharmed, but the other woman was bitten while she was trying to secure her dog. The 45-year-old woman was treated at a local hospital after the pitbull bit her hand during the attack, while her dog suffered a broken leg, McManus said.
The pitbull was taken to the Humane Society, where it will spend 10 days being monitored for rabies.
"Anytime a dog bites another dog or person ... we follow certain rules to keep people safe from rabies," Animal Control Supervisor Julie DeJong said.
The dog's owner could not provide proof of rabies vaccinations at the time of the attack, which occurred off the owner's property. Both of these circumstances give Animal Control the right to quarantine the dog until authorities can determine if it has rabies, DeJong said.
There have been no reports of the dog attacking people or animals in the past, she said.
As for what will happen to the dog if it does not test positive for rabies, DeJong said Animal Control is "still deciding what's going to happen."
The dog's owner was not cited because the dog pushed its way through a screened window. If a window or door had been open, DeJong said, the owner could have been cited for negligence.
"This is a case where the dog let itself out," DeJong said.
