Four residents and four pets were displaced from their home after a late afternoon attic fire at a home in the 3700 block of E. 20th Street.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Mark Bukovich said they received a call from a person passing by at about 4:30 p.m. alerting them of the fire.

When crews arrived on scene we already had heavy smoke and fire showing from the roof of the house," Bukovich said.

The residents were home at the time, but did not realize their home was on fire. A neighbor knocked on their door to tell them to evacuate.

"Most of the fire damage is isolated to the attic area," Bukovich said. "It was above any of the ceilings and very concealed."

Of the household pets, two dogs and an iguana are accounted for, but a cat is still missing, said Bukovich.

Bukovich said crews will remain on scene to pull out insulation from the attic, look for hotspots and put out any remaining fires in the attic.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing
