A Brookings woman has filed a federal lawsuit against Wal-Mart Stores Inc., after an alleged improper tire mounting caused her to crash on the interstate.

Rudy Anderson says in court papers that Wal-Mart in Watertown in December 2014 failed to correctly mount the wheel and tire on the front driver’s side.

The federal lawsuit filed Monday alleges that a week later, as Anderson drove north on I-29, the wheel and tired came off causing a crash that injured her shoulder and head.

Anderson’s medical bills have exceeded $30,000, the lawsuit says. And she will need further treatment, the lawsuit says.

The lawsuit says Wal-Mart’s negligence caused Anderson’s injuries, and she is seeking “fair and reasonable” damages.

Anderson’s lawyers were not immediately available for comment.

A spokesman for Wal-Mart said he could not comment because they have yet to review the federal complaint.

"We take the safety of all our customers very seriously, and we will review the complaint when we get it and respond appropriately," the spokesperson said.
