Jury selection is underway for the trial of a man accused of murder, rape and burglary in the death of a Sioux Falls woman.

Kryger was arrested in March 2014, nearly a week after 56-year-old Kari Anne Kirkegaard was found dead in her bathtub having been raped and strangled. Christopher Dean Kryger, 41, faces first- and second-degree murder charges, separate counts of second- and third-degree rape and two counts of first-degree burglary.

Kryger has an extensive criminal history and spent much of his adult life in prison following an aggravated assault and arson conviction in 1992.

The trial will determine if Kryger will spend the rest of his life in prison. Prosecutors have yet to decide whether to seek the death penalty.

Jury selection began Tuesday and could continue through the rest of the week.

Once jury selection concludes, the trial will begin.
