Stabbing suspect held on no bond after court appearance

The man arrested following a stabbing that left a 19-year-old woman dead and another man injured was in court Monday.

Janno Kollay Talla, 31, of Worthington, Minn., faces murder charges following the incident Thursday night at 1908 E. Rice St. in Sioux Falls.

Talla was arrested Thursday night after police stopped him near Worthington. He faces two counts of first-degree murder, one count of second-degree murder and two counts aggravated assault.

The maximum penalty for first-degree murder is the death penalty, and second-degree murder carries a mandatory minimum sentence of life in prison without parole. A first-degree murder conviction requires that the victim's death was intentional and premeditated.

Ammuna Gayya, of Sioux Falls, died in a hospital from stab wounds, police said. Danga Kotudi, 27, was also stabbed and received non-life threatening injuries.

Stabbing victim was 'always able to make others laugh'

Talla appeared at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Minnehaha County Courthouse. He is being held without bond in the Minnehaha County Jail.

Funeral services for Gayya are at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Josephine Bakhita Parish at the Cathedral of St. Joseph. Visitation will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the church with a liturgical wake service at 6:30 p.m.
